Uptown Urban Craft → About Me → About the Process → A Word About Vintage Textiles

Laura Whitney is an independent crafts-person based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Since she was a little girl she dreamed of growing up and being “an artist”. Laura has been sewing creatively since she was old enough to hold a needle, making her her own doll clothes and Halloween costumes, as girls often do. During her teen years, her fascination and self-study of historic costuming found an outlet in the theater where her passion grew. To work her way through college she was employed as a tailor in a local shop for 5 years, which raised her skills with clothing and textiles to an exceptional level. Throughout her life Laura has enjoyed learning many different artistic medias including ceramics, painting, metal arts and jewelry design, interior design and upholstery, sculpture and photography. It is this broad education and a love for all art that is reflected in her work which mixes modern and traditional styles.
Today Laura lives with her husband Dylan and their two cats, Groucho and Tabby, in the fabulous and inspirational Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis. Their breezy little third floor apartment overlooks the Wedge community which exists as beacon of unique, cutting edge fashion and art for the Twin Cities.
